Scenario
Emilia Pérez follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each searching for their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists the help of Rita, an unsung lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as herself. Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two years of preparation it took for this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film, and about the two extremes of her own personality she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard has said that he drew inspiration for the idea for the musical from a chapter in a novel about a drug dealer who yearns to change his identity. This is pure madness
My second favorite Cannes film after “The Substance” (I haven’t seen “Anora”). A musical about drug traffickers and corruption in Mexico??? WTF??? “Emilia Perez” is really inventive. It mixes a lot of different genres: drama, comedy, musical, thriller, but does it in a very good and entertaining way. It’s also extremely original and also surprisingly moving. There is a character here who goes through an emotional and heartbreaking journey throughout the film. I won’t go into details.
Gascon plays the main character
It’s not really a spoiler because it’s revealed in the first 15-20 minutes of the film, but I didn’t know it and I was shocked that this film was going in this direction. That’s why you are advised not to read the description and go see it blind if you want to have the best possible experience. The best thing about this “Emilia Perez” are definitely performances. She won the best actress award at Cannes for 4 performances (Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz). Saldana plays the main character and has many intense and spectacular scenes (especially musical ones). I am happy that after all these blockbusters, she finally got the role where she could show her acting skills. She is a bit of a supporting role but she is the heart of the film and the whole plot revolves around her. Gomez and Paz were good but I am surprised that they also won the Palme – their performances were not as great and memorable as Saldana and Gascon.
This film is elegant and beautiful
Jacques Audiard’s vision is bold and impressive. I love the cinematography and the music. It doesn’t all work perfectly and there were a few moments where I wasn’t completely exhausted but for the most part I was enjoying it and marveling at its craziness, ingenuity and originality. I’m not a huge fan of musicals but the musical scenes (which aren’t many) in this film are captivating and very well choreographed. shot that makes them enjoyable to watch. The songs are catchy and memorable (my favorites are about vaginoplasty and the taste of Cola). “Emilia Perez” is not for everyone. Some people walked out, some said it was one of the worst films of the festival, some loved it (including me).
Let’s support weird and niche cinema
The general public is not going to like this. The closest film I’ve seen is “Annette” by Leos Carax. “Emilia Perez” is more popular but it will still be missed by many people. But I encourage you to see it anyway.
